The company is principally engaged in mining, processing, refining and marketing precious metals and minerals. It was incorporated in 1946 and has its registered office in Johannesburg, South Africa. The company was formerly known as Anglo American Platinum Corporation until May 2006. It is publicly traded in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange under the trading symbol AMS, and is also listed on The London Stock Exchange.The company is the world's leading primary producer of platinum and accounts for approximately 38 percent of the world's newly mined production. It also produces other platinum group metals (PGMs) in quantities determined by their occurrence in the ores mined. Apart from platinum, PGMs comprise palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium. Nickel, copper and other base metal products are byproducts of PGM operations.The company's operations comprise seven mines, three smelters, a base metals refinery and a precious metals refinery. It has production sites in Rustenburg, Amandelbult, Union, Potgietersrust, Lebowa, Bafokeng, Modikwa and Kroondal. The Waterval, Polokwane and Mortimer smelters process PGM concentrates from Anglo Platinum concentrating operations and concentrate purchased mainly from joint venture partners to produce furnace matte.The company is in joint venture with ARM Platinum, Royal Bafokeng Resources, Lonmin Platinum, the Bapo Ba Mogale Tribe and Mvelaphanda. It also has established potential partners in the Unki Platinum Mine which include Anglo American Corporation of South Africa, a local Zimbabwean consortium, and an Anglo American Corporation Zimbabwe employees' trust.The company created the Platinum Guild International (PGI) in 1975 and provides funding for its jewelry development efforts. The PGI has offices in Japan, Italy, Germany, the UK, the USA, China and India. The company is active in other industry organizations, including the International Platinum Association, which provides a communication forum for producers and fabricators and the World Fuel Cell Council, a body dedicated to the commercialization of fuel cell technology.The strategy of the company is to grow the market for platinum group metals, to expand into that growth, and to optimize value in current operations. The company's management and operational efforts are dedicated to optimizing the use of its resources for the benefit of local and foreign stakeholders.The company operates in South Africa, Switzerland, Isle of Man, the Cayman Islands, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Cyprus, Mauritius, the United States of America, Lesotho and Luxembourg.
