This company is engaged in the provision of electric and gas, and other utility services. It was incorporated in 1909 as Washington County Light & Power Company. The company was formed from the merger of Northern States Power (Minnesota), Northern States Power (Wisconsin) and New Century Energies, which was the result of a prior merger between Public Service Company of Colorado (Denver, CO) and Southwestern Public Service (Amarillo, TX). It has its registered head office in Minneapolis, United States.The company was created as a holding company which owns three formerly independent companies: Northern States Power (Minnesota), Northern States Power (Wisconsin), and New Century Energies. Its business operations included the activities of its subsidiaries. The company owns two nuclear power plants, the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant, an electricity-generating facility located in Monticello, Minnesota along the Mississippi River; and the Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant, an electricity-generating facility located in Red Wing, Minnesota along the Mississippi River, adjacent to the Prairie Island Indian Community reservation. These nuclear power plants are both operated by the Nuclear Management Company, an organization co-owned by Xcel and one other energy company.The company serves eight states such as Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin. As a leading combination electricity and natural gas energy company, it offers a comprehensive portfolio of energy-related products and services to 3.3 million electricity customers and 1.8 million natural gas customers, as recorded in 2004.The company's vision is to serve its communities by providing energy to enhance the quality of life for its customers.
