It was formed in 1926 by the merger of four United Kingdom chemical companies: Brunner Mond, Nobel Industries, British Dyestuffs, and United Alkali. It was formerly known as Imperial Chemical Industries Plc, and it conducts business from its registered head office located in London, England in the United Kingdom. It also has operating subsidiaries in the United States, South Africa, Germany, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Japan, Brazil, Ireland, Pakistan, India, France, Mexico, and Malaysia. The company operates in five segments: paints (offers decorative paint and packaging coatings for food and beverage cans); adhesives (manufactures industrial adhesives, including waterborne, hot melt, pressure sensitive adhesives, and process lubricants); specialty starches (produces specialty food and industrial starches); specialty polymers (offers redispersible emulsion powder polymers, rheology modifiers, and dispersants and antiscalants for water treatment and personal care, as well as thickeners for paper coating); and electronic materials (manufactures and sells adhesives, encapsulants, and specialty coatings used in the assembly of semiconductor packages and the production of electronic, automotive, medical, and aerospace devices). It serves decorative and architectural, food and beverage, personal care, textiles and footwear, paper and packaging, electronics, and construction industries. It operates as a subsidiary of Akzo Nobel NV, a paint and coating manufacturer, and is one of the world's leading chemical producers.
