It was founded in 1945 as Canandaigua Industries and began its business in a former Sauerkraut factory with a staff of eight. Since its foundation in 1945, the company has grown through a combination of organic growth and acquisitions. The company operates through three business segments: Constellation Wines, Constellation Spirits, and Crown Imports. Constellation Brands' geographic markets include North America (primarily the United States), Europe (primarily the United Kingdom), and Australasia (primarily Australia and New Zealand). It is headquartered in Fairport, New York, USA. It is the largest wine company in the world by volume and is the largest multi-category supplier of beverage alcohol in the United States and Canada. It is also the leading producer and exporter of wine from Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and both a major producer and independent drinks wholesaler in the United Kingdom. With more than 250 beverage alcohol brands marketed in 150 countries, the company offers consumers their beverage of choice for all occasions. The company operates 60 production facilities located in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Following its formation of a joint venture (forming Crown Imports LLC) with Mexico's Grupo Modelo, the company became the second largest United States beverage alcohol company, on a pro forma basis, based upon retail sales in the food and drug channels, and its Mexican beer portfolio becomes the undisputed imported beer leader in the United States. The company has also participated in the establishment and commencement operations of the Matthew Clark joint venture with Punch Taverns PLC (Punch), in which Punch acquired half of the interest in the company's wholesale business in the United Kingdom. Further, it has completed the acquisition of the SVEDKA Vodka brand and related business.
