The company is engaged in the exploration, production, refining, marketing, processing, and supply of petroleum products as well as production and distribution of chemicals and plastics. It was established in 2002 by the merger of Conoco Inc. and Phillips Petroleum Company. The registered headquarters of the company is located in Houston, United States of America. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.The company is the third-largest integrated energy company in the United States with operations in 40 countries. It operates in four business segments: petroleum exploration and production; petroleum refining, marketing, supply and transportation; natural gas gathering, processing and marketing; and chemicals and plastics production and distribution. In addition, the company also invests in four emerging businesses including technology solutions, carbons-to-liquids, power generation and alternative energy and programs.For its production and exploration activities, the company produces crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGL). It has production and exploration areas in the North Slope of Alaska, the Asia Pacific region, Caspian Sea, Middle East, Nigeria, the North Sea, Russia, the Lower 48 United States, including the Gulf of Mexico; and Venezuela. For its refining and marketing activities, it is the second-largest refiner in the United States and, of nongovernmental-controlled companies, is the fourth-largest refiner in the world. The company owns 12 U.S. refineries, owns or has interest in six European refineries as well as refinery in Malaysia. The company's gasoline and distillates are sold through approximately 13,600 branded outlets in the United States (marketed under the Phillips 66 and Conoco brands), and Europe and the Asia Pacific region (marketed under JET and ProJET brands).
