This company, formerly known as The Burmah Oil Public Limited Company, is a holding entity to a group engaged in the manufacture and marketing of specialized lubricants, chemicals and refined petroleum and fuel products. Based in Aberdeen, United Kingdom, the company was incorporated in 1886 as The Burmah Oil Company Ltd. As a holding entity, the company handles the administrative affairs and services of a holding company and assumes management services to its local group and units. It also controls and coordinates the business of its associate companies and provides assistance to companies it holds an interest. The company has more than 150 subsidiaries operating in about 55 countries including Burmah Fuels Australia Limited. Through a subsidiary in the Netherlands, it has a joint venture with Cubalub to use excess Republic of Cuba refining capacity to process lubricants for sale within the Republic of Cuba and to Caribbean Sea-area countries. The company has 11 percent of the global vehicle oil market. The group's Castrol brand is one of the world's great brands and has a global market share of five percent in the lubricants business. Through the Castrol brand, it is the world's leading supplier of automobile and motorcycle lubricants, including engine oils, transmission fluids, and brake fluids. Castrol has a record of growing its sales faster than the market, particularly in emerging economies such as India, China and Latin America. The group's chemical products include those used in foundries and steel works as well as those used in the civil engineering and construction industries. It is also the world leader in screen printing inks and related products.
