The company, also known as Scotiabank, operates as a commercial bank. It was incorporated in January of 1832 and has its registered head office in Toronto, Canada.The bank is considered as one of the leading financial institutions in North America. It operates through three business segments namely, Domestic Banking, International Banking and Scotia Capital. Domestic banking segment covers the provision of banking and investment services to more than seven million retail, wealth management, small business and commercial customers throughout Canada. These services are offered through automated banking machines, Internet, telephone and wireless banking, call centers, wealth management branches, dealer finance centers and commercial business support centers across the country. International banking segment covers the provision of retail and commercial banking services in the Caribbean and Central America, Mexico, Latin America and Asia. The Scotia Capital segment is governed by Scotiabank's subsidiary Scotia Capital Inc. This subsidiary offers lending, investment banking and capital markets services for the corporate, government and institutional sectors. Its business operations are focused in North America (e.g. Canada and Mexico), Central and South America (e.g. Brazil, Belize, Chile, El Salvador and Peru), Asia Pacific (e.g. China, India, Japan, and Thailand), Europe (e.g. Ireland and United Kingdom), the Middle East (e.g. Egypt) and Caribbean (e.g. Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands and Aruba). The bank's common shares are traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BNS.
