It is active in all types of retail distribution, primarily food retailing: The hypermarkets, which offer a wide range of food and non-food products; The supermarkets, which offer a wide selection of mostly food products; Hard discounters, which stock around 800 food products in small stores, half of the products are sold under the Dia brand name; Convenience stores, which offer a range of products covering all food requirements, also offers a range of services; Cash-and-carry, which wholesales and retails self-service, mainly of food products and intended for businesses; and Electronic commerce, a cyber-market where shopping can be ordered on the Internet and delivered to the door.The world's second-largest retailer, the company operates more than 12,000 stores under some two dozen names, including hypermarkets (Carrefour), supermarkets (Champion), convenience stores (Shopi, MarchéPlus), discount stores (Dia, Ed), and cash-and-carry stores (Promocash) in about 30 countries in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. France accounts for nearly half of the retailer's sales. The company was created in 1959 by the Fournier and Defforey families.

Stangata per Carrefour in Francia. La catena di supermercati è stata multata per oltre 2,9 milioni di euro per aver violato le norme sulle negoziazioni commerciali contenute nella legge sull’alimentazione entrata in vigore nel febbraio 2019. Insieme a Carrefour, sono stati sanzionati anche Système U e Intermarché, che rispettivamente hanno ricevuto multe per 1,14 milioni di euro e 211 mila euro, portando il totale a oltre 4 milioni di euro di sanzioni.
