Description of economic activities

Restaurants and mobile food service activities (NACE2 5610)

The entity, based in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, is the world's largest restaurant company with over 34,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries and territories operating under the KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Long John Silver's and A&W All-American Food Restaurants trade names. It was created in October of 1997 via a tax-free distribution by former parent, PepsiCo, Inc., of its common stock (the spin-off) to its shareholders. Through its widely-recognized concepts, the company develops, operates, franchises and licenses a system of both traditional and nontraditional quick service restaurants. Each concept has proprietary menu items and emphasizes the preparation of food with high quality ingredients as well as unique recipes and special seasonings to provide appealing, tasty and attractive food at competitive prices. Its traditional restaurant feature dine-in, carryout and, in some instances, drive-thru or delivery service. Non-traditional units, which are principally licensed outlets, include express units and kiosks which have a more limited menu and operate in nontraditional locations like airports, gasoline service stations, convenience stores, stadiums, amusement parks and colleges, where a full-scale traditional outlet would not be practical or efficient. The company also operates multibrand units, where two or more of its concepts are operated in a single unit. In addition, it continues to pursue the multibrand combination of Pizza Hut and WingStreet, a flavored chicken wings concept the company has developed. The company's business consists of three reporting segments: United States, the International Division and the China Division. The China Division includes mainland China, Thailand and KFC Taiwan and has more than 2,600 system restaurants (Q4 2006). Mainland China is the company's number one market for new company restaurant development worldwide. In 2006, operating profits for the China Division were more than USD 290 million. Yum Restaurants International (YRI) is the largest division of the company with nearly 12,000 restaurants outside the United States. For the past four years, the company has been recognized as one of Fortune Magazine's Top 50 Employers for Minorities. It also has been recognized as one of the Top 50 Employers for Women by Fortune, one of the 40 Best Companies for Diversity by Black Enterprise Magazine for the past two years and one of Black Enterprise's 30 Hottest Franchises for 2006, one of the Corporate 100 Companies Providing Opportunities for Hispanics by Hispanic Magazine, one of the Top 50 Corporations for Supplier Diversity by Hispanic Trends Magazine and by BusinessWeek as one of the Top 15 Companies for In-Kind Corporate Philanthropy.
