The company was formed from the merger of Northern States Power (Minnesota), Northern States Power (Wisconsin) and New Century Energies, which was the result of a prior merger between Public Service Company of Colorado (Denver, CO) and Southwestern Public Service (Amarillo, TX). It has its registered head office in Minneapolis, United States.The company was created as a holding company which owns three formerly independent companies: Northern States Power (Minnesota), Northern States Power (Wisconsin), and New Century Energies. Its business operations included the activities of its subsidiaries. The company owns two nuclear power plants, the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant, an electricity-generating facility located in Monticello, Minnesota along the Mississippi River; and the Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant, an electricity-generating facility located in Red Wing, Minnesota along the Mississippi River, adjacent to the Prairie Island Indian Community reservation. These nuclear power plants are both operated by the Nuclear Management Company, an organization co-owned by Xcel and one other energy company.The company serves eight states such as Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin.
