The company is engaged in power generation and natural gas distribution. The company, with headquarters located in Calgary, Alberta, was founded in 1951.The company is a leader in the responsible development and reliable operation of North American energy infrastructure. It operates in two business segments: Gas transmission and Power. Gas transmission segment provides natural gas transmission from Western Canada to the rest of Canada, the United States and Mexico. It is the largest shareholder of TransCanada PipeLines, LP, which owns many of Canada's natural gas pipelines, as well as a number in the United States. It also investigates and develops new natural gas transmission, storage and liquefied natural gas regasification facilities in Canada and the United States. Power segment builds, owns and operates electrical power generation plants, and markets electricity. The company is also expanding its business to include a growing number of electrical generating assets. In February 2007, the company completed the acquisition of American Natural Resources Company and ANR Storage Company (collectively known as ANR), a company in Texas which operates one of the largest interstate natural gas pipeline systems in the United States. ANR provides storage, transportation, and various capacity-related services to a variety of customers in both the United States and Canada.
