It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland, is one of the largest tobacco companies in the world. The company produces many of the world's best-selling cigarette brands, including the most popular brand worldwide. Its cigarette brands include Marlboro (the world's top-selling cigarette), Bond Street, Chesterfield, Lark, Apollo Soyuz, Peter Jackson, Merit, Optima, Parliament, Philip Morris, and Virginia Slims, as well as popular regional brands. The company's mission is to offer the best smoking experience to every adult smoker in the world, today and tomorrow.It holds a 15 percent share of the international cigarette market and employs more than 80,000 people worldwide. Philip Morris International does not own any tobacco farms. It buys tobacco from leaf merchant companies and farmers from all over the world, including Brazil, Greece, Italy, Malawi, Poland, Thailand, Turkey and the United States. In PMI, manufacturing cigarettes is a fast-paced, highly automated process. Machines produce between 8,000 and 14,000 cigarettes every minute. Spools of cigarette paper up to 6,000 meters long are rolled out and tobacco is placed on it. The paper is closed over the tobacco, making one long cigarette known as a rod. The company's cigarettes are made in more than 50 factories around the world and sold in more than 160 markets.The history of Philip Morris International can be traced back to Philip Morris's 1847 opening of a single shop on London's Bond Street, selling tobacco and ready-made cigarettes. In 1881 the company went public, Leopold Morris joining Joseph Grunebaum to establish Philip Morris & Company and Grunebaum, Ltd. This partnership was dissolved in 1885 and the company became known as Philip Morris & Co., Ltd. In December 2005 the company and China National Tobacco Corporation (CNTC) reached agreement on the licensed production in China of PMI's Marlboro brand and the establishment of an international equity joint venture between China National Tobacco Import and Export Group Corporation (CNTIEGC), a wholly owned subsidiary of CNTC, and PMI. In January 2007, PMI entered into an agreement to acquire an additional 50.21 percent stake in Lakson Tobacco from major shareholders.It is a subsidiary of Altria Group, Inc. Formerly named Philip Morris Companies Inc., Altria is the parent company of Philip Morris International, Philip Morris USA and Philip Morris Capital Corporation. In addition, Altria Group, Inc. has a economic and voting interest in SABMiller PLC. Altria is one of the world's largest tobacco, food and beverage corporations and is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500.
