In 1999, it was renamed into NiSource Inc.Based in Merrillville Lake, Indiana, it is one of the top 500 American public corporations. The company operates in four divisions: Gas Distribution Operations, Gas Transmission and Storage Operations, Electric Operations, and Other Operations. The Gas Distribution Operations division is responsible for the provision of natural gas to residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, northern Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. The Gas Transmission and Storage Operations division owns and operates approximately 16 thousand miles of interstate pipelines and operated underground natural gas storage systems capable of storing approximately 637 billion cubic feet of natural gas.The company's Electric Operations division generates, transmits, and distributes electricity to numerous customers in the northern part of Indiana, and it also engages in wholesale and transmission transactions. Within this division, NiSource owns and operates four coal-fired electric generating stations with a net capability of approximately 3,000 megawatt (mw), six gas-fired generating units with a net capability of more than 300 mw, and two hydroelectric generating plants with a net capability of approximately 10 mw.The Other Operations division of NiSource is involved in the provision of energy-related services, including gas marketing, power and gas risk management. It also manages business enterprises focused on the distributed power generation technologies, as well as a cogeneration facility, fuel cells, and storage systems. In addition, this division is engaged in real estate and other businesses.The company is a member of ESC (Energy Solutions Centre), a technology commercialization and market development organization on behalf of energy, utilities, municipal energy authorities, and equipment manufacturers and vendors.
