The Edeka Group was founded in 1898 when 21 purchased associations from the German Reich in the Gate district in Berlin were united.The company is a powerful force in food sales in Germany. It is one of Europe's largest retail and wholesale food organizations. The company is a group of 15 cooperatives composed of largely independent retailers supplied by its own regional food wholesalers.The company offers organic fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and cereals under the Bio Wertkost brand. Other brands include Rio Grande and Mibell. The company also has drugstores, several food-processing and wine operations, a publishing house, and a banking subsidiary.The company owns nearly 95 percent of AVA, a German retailer with hypermarkets and other stores, as well as German grocery-store chains, Otto Reichelt and SPAR. The subsidiary, Edeka AG, the central administrative entity, is engaged in ordering goods and services, marketing of the company's own brand products sold in the retail outlet network, and technical training for employees and the company press office. Edeka Fruchtkontore manages the ordering and marketing of fruit and vegetable produced, and Rheinberg Kellerei is engaged in the acquisition and sale of wines and spirits.Another subsidiary, Edeka Zentrale Ag & Co. KG, manages the company's investments in and relations with the regional retail subsidiaries of the Edeka Group in Germany, while Edeka Verlag GmbH is a publishing subsidiary that produces literature for internal and external clients.
